Asian Beef Skewers with Onions

This dish may not look like much, but it is full of so much flavor and pretty easy and quick to make. It requires some time to marinate the meat, but luckily that requires no effort on your part. The meat in this is so tender and juicy after it marinates for 24 hours and soaks up all the delicious flavor in the sauce. This dish isn’t much, but I promise it is comforting and warm and perfect for a cooler night. This dish was inspired by one of my favorite thai dishes – although this dish is different in many ways, I was inspired. The dish I used for inspiration is called Sizzling Heavenly Beef – it is kind of like the thai version of fajitas. It comes with tender beef, onions, and a delicious salty/sweet/spicy sauce and is typically served with white rice. It is one of my favorite takeout dishes when I am looking to eat a higher protein, lower carb meal and it is so good I don’t even need the rice. Like I said, this dish is different, yet similar. Mine doesn’t come served on a hot plate and I threw some mushrooms and green onions in for extra flavors. Check this out if you are feeling like trying something new!

For the Beef:

  • 1.5 Lbs Chuck Steak, Cubed
  • 3 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Ginger
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Rice Vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Sambal Oelek
  • 2 Tbsp Miso Paste
  • 2 Tbsp Chili Onion Crunch (Trader Joe’s – can skip this ingredient)
  • 1 Tbsp Chili Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Peanut Oil (Can substitute with Sesame Oil)

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 Cup Soy Sauce
  • 1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Miso Paste
  • 4 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Chili Crunch Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Cornstarch + 3 Tbsp Soy Sauce, Mixed Together
  • 2 Yellow Onions, Sliced
  • 1 Cup Sliced Mushrooms
  • 1 Cup Green Onions, Cut in 1 Inch Pieces
  • Serves: 4
  • Prep Time: 24 Hours
  • Cook Time: 30 Minutes

To Make:

  1. First we need to marinate the meat for at least 24 hours. Start by combining all the ingredients (except for the beef) listed under “For the Beef” in a large bowl. Whisk to combine well. Add in the beef, cover and place in the fridge for at least 24 hours.
  2. After the meat has been marinating it’s time to cook! Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. SKewer the beef on metal skewers and place on a baking sheet. *save any marinade that is left after removing the beef.
  3. Place the beef in the oven and cook for 25 minutes.
  4. While the beef is cooking, let’s make the onions and sauce. In the same bowl with the leftover marinade, add in the 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 2 tbsp miso paste, 4 tbsp minced garlic, 1 tbsp fish sauce, and the 2 tbsp chili crunch oil and mix well.
  5. Heat a large pan over medium heat and add in the sauce, yellow onions and mushrooms. Cook for 12 minutes, stirring frequently until the mushrooms and onions soften.
  6. Add in the green onions and cook for another 5 minutes.
  7. Next add in the cornstarch + soy sauce mixture and stir until the sauce begins to thicken – about 5 minutes.
  8. Remove the onions and sauce from the heat and divide between 4 bowls and top with the meat. Serve with rice if desired!
