
There are tons of great Borek spots in Berlin, with most of them being concentrated in Kreuzberg. This is primarily due to this neighborhood being such a lively living area for the Turkish community, and you can feel that energy in every bakery window.
If you are not familiar with Borek, let me introduce you. It is a savory pastry originating in the Middle East. It is commonly made using phyllo dough brushed with butter or olive oil, so you get all those flaky, crispy layers. Typical fillings include cheese, spinach, potatoes, minced meat, herbs, and any combination of those.
You’ll also find them in so many different shapes, which is part of the fun. Some are beautiful spiraled coils, some are baked as a big round circle that gets cut into pieces, and some are shaped more like a spring roll. Any option is good, and I highly recommend trying a few to see which filling and style is your favorite.
While in Berlin, I ate multiple Borek a day, no joke. My absolute favorite was the cheese and spinach filled one. I didn’t really have a particular shape I preferred, but I did notice that the ones baked on the big sheet tray and cut into squares seemed to be a little crispier, which I loved.
If you find yourself in Kreuzberg, just follow your nose to the nearest bakery case. You can’t go wrong.
