Emirzade Doner

Doner is a staple in Berlin and in fact was invented there years ago. It was originally invented by a Turkish immigrant to make a handheld kebab for after those famous Berlin parties, and it’s been a city essential ever since.

Some of the best Doner is in the Kreuzberg neighborhood since it has the highest Turkish population, so of course that’s where we went hunting. We ended up at Emirzade Doner, which is a decent spot to grab a quick bite, but it wasn’t my favorite.

While all Doner is very similar, each shop will do slightly different seasonings or sauces so not every Doner tastes identical, and you can really tell the difference when you start trying a few. For me, this Emirzade just didn’t have as much flavor and the bread was a little on the thin and soggy side from all the sauce and juices. I also wish the veggies had been chopped a bit finer to make each bite more consistent.

Overall though, you can’t go wrong with a Doner Kebap, so even the ones that aren’t my favorite are still pretty dang good. Emirzade was a perfectly fine, quick stop, and it’s still part of the whole Berlin experience I wouldn’t skip.
