NuNu’s has been a part of the OKC food scene for generations. They have been serving up absolutely incredible mediterranean food and their dishes speak for themselves. The owners use their grandma’s recipes that are hundreds of years old and have been passed down through the years – so you know it is going to be good. NuNu’s might not be a fancy restaurant or have an “instagramable” interior, but what they do have is character, heart and delicious dishes. It isn’t flashy but it’s classic and when you’re food tastes that good, you don’t need to do much more. I have been going here since a young woman and would often go with my mom for lunch dates. I have so many good memories of this place and the nostalgia really hits for me. When I first moved to Seattle, this was one of the spots I missed the most. Not only did I miss their phenomenal cuisine, but I missed those dates with my mom. When I moved back to OKC, I was thrilled and this was one of the first spots I went to again. Seattle, I love you, but honestly your mediterranean food just isn’t up to the standard, which is shocking for how much diversity there is the PNW.
Anyways, NuNu’s menu is simple but still features a large variety of options to choose from and they are vegetarian friendly with multiple dishes you can get! My go to is the Sampler Plate. It comes with Hashwa, Chicken Kebab, Beef Kofta, Cabbage Roll AND hummus and tabouli with pita. There is so much variety and flavor on the plate and it is perfect when you want to try a little bit of everything. The chicken is some of the juiciest, most tender chicken I have ever had. I don’t know how they do it, but it is bursting with flavor and juice and falls apart on your fork. The beef kofta is also so tender and soft – I can never decide which one I like more! If you’re with friends, I also recommend getting their Maza Sampler. It comes with hummus, baba ganoush, cucumber yogurt, grape leaves, kibba, olives and pita! It is a lot, but you’ll get to try it all. I am a big fan of sampling everything, even if that means taking home some leftovers for later. I love all of their appetizers, but their hummus is some next level shit. Let me tell you. Holy moly, it is the creamiest, smoothest, richest hummus of all time. It also has such a good flavor without being overpowering – it is hard to describe, so just go taste some and you’ll thank me later! I’ve had plenty of hummus that has little to no flavor, too chunky, or too thin. There is an art to it and they are true masters.
If you go try one new restaurant in OKC this month or year, let it be this place. You can even order online for easy pick up or delivery!
