Antigua Guatemala Restaurant

Have you ever had Guatemalan food? I can’t say that I have had much exposure to it until I learned about Antigua Guatemala Restaurant. They are bringing tradition and authentic Guatemalan cuisine to the PNW! Due to Covid, I have not been able to enjoy these dishes in the actual restaurant, but lucky for me, I live close enough to enjoy takeout anytime I want! They offer a great variety of delicious dishes it is very hard to choose what to order, but I’m hoping to make my way through the entire menu!

We ordered a little bit of everything to get a good taste of what Guatemalan food is. We got the Black Bean Tostada ($2.50 each), Mixed Pupusa ($4), Dobladas de Res ($9.95), and Shuco ($8.95). The Black Bean Tostada is pretty much what it sounds like – a crispy corn tortilla topped with a thin layer of black beans. Very simple, but also incredibly tasty. The tortilla remained extremely crispy even though it travelled for about 15-20 minutes before we ate it – so that speaks to the quality and freshness of the food they are whipping up! They also offer tostadas topped with guacamole and tomato salsa – I recommend ordering one of each to try them all! The Mixed Pupusa comes as one and is a thicker corn tortillas that is stuffed with black beans, pork and cheese and then grilled. It is served with a tomatoey salsa that is slightly sweet so it works really well with the savoriness of the pupusa. They also offer pork and cheese or black bean and cheese if you don’t want to mix them! The Dobladas de Res are crispy tacos filled with beef, onions, and cabbage. The beef was so tender and juicy and again, the tortillas manages to stay crunchy, so you’ve got this crunchy and soft thing going on that is perfection. Lastly, but certainly not lease – the Shuco. It is like a twist on a hot dog. It is a boiled sausage that is topped with guacamole, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, picamas (hot sauce), and cabbage. I was definitely hesitant to order this because there is a lot going on here and typically flavors that don’t necessarily work or go together. I’m all for ketchup and mustard on a hot dog, but then you throw on mayo AND guacamole?! You have got to be crazy! I was definitely wrong – this somehow works well and is actually pretty good! Might not be what I always order, but its definitely worth a try and would totally eat it again!

There are several other items on the menu that have caught my attention and I am looking forward to trying them all! I love finding and trying new cuisines and am so glad this place is bringing a more culture and diversity to the area. If you’re around the area, give them a try because you will be opened to a whole new world of delicious possibilities!
