Prince’s Hot Chicken

Despite what social media might say, Prince’s Hot Chicken is actually the original Hot Chicken spot! They are much less well known than Hattie B’s, but they are the true champion of chicken. The menu remains simple, but their quality and standards are high and they pride themselves on having a lasting creation over the last 100 years. Prince’s features 8 spice ranges from plain to XXX Hot and let me tell you now, if these spice levels are not what you are used to. If you can handle a 5 at a Thai or Indian restaurant, I hate to break it to you, but you’ll probably only be able to handle a medium or hot here. You can either grab chicken tenders, wings, a whole chicken, combo or a chicken sandwich. You can also grab one of their delicious sides – baked beans, cole slaw, mac & cheese, potato salad, fries, or greens.

I grabbed tenders with two different spice levels. I did a Lite Mild and Hot to see how I could handle it. Even the lite mild had a kick of spice that was very pronounced. The hot was just too hot for me and I couldn’t even eat more than a few bites – I was sweating by two bites in! For the actual chicken, it was really crispy and fried really well on the outside. I did feel that the inside wasn’t as juicy as it could have been – maybe a tradeoff with how crispy the outside was? The flavor was good as well, but it wasn’t mouthwatering on its own. I preferred dipping it in the honey mustard vs eating it by itself. Overall it was solid fried chicken and you should absolutely give it a try since they are the OG!
