Chicken Burgers

There is nothing like a good, juicy burger. I love grilling burgers in the summer, but I still crave them year round. This burger recipe is for those that want a delicious burger but maybe something a bit healthier and not as greasy and fatty. The humble chicken burger is often overlooked by its beef cousin and don’t get me wrong, a beef burger definitely ranks up there, but chicken can be just as satisfying. For my chicken burger, I load if with seasonings and flavor and grill it on the stove top to perfection. I have opted to also make caramelized onions to go on top for even more deliciousness. You could make these burgers as simple or as luxurious as you want with a variety of toppings. I kept mine fairly classic because there is nothing better than a simple burger. The chicken patties stay juicy and moist through the cooking process so the end result is a messy burger that you will absolutely love. I made these for dinner and everyone went back for seconds! Give these chicken burgers a chance and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised that they can be just as wonderful as a beef burger.

  • 1 Lb Ground Chicken
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 Tbsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp Oregano
  • 1/2 Tbsp Basil
  • 1/2 Tbsp Cumin
  • 2 Tsp Paprika
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tsp Worcestershire
  • 1/3 Cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Onion, Sliced
  • Salt + Pepper
  • 6 Burger Buns
  • 6 Slices Havarti Cheese
  • Butter
  • Olive Oil
  • Optional Toppings: Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Mustard, Aioli, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes
  • Makes: 6 Burgers
  • Prep Time: 30 Minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 Minutes
  • Total Time: 50 Minutes

To Make:

  1. Heat a medium pan over medium to high heat and add in 1 tbsp of olive oil and the sliced onions. Saute the onions for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the onions start to get some color, reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once caramelized, transfer the onions to a bowl and set aside. *you can completely skip this step if you don’t want caramelized onions.
  2. If you are making the onions, you can continue working on the remaining steps while they cook, just make sure to stir them occasionally so the don’t burn.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, add the ground chicken, minced garlic, onion powder, oregano, basil, cumin, paprika, worcestershire, and season with salt and pepper. Mix to combine well.
  4. Next, add in the egg and breadcrumbs to the ground chicken and mix well.
  5. Divide the ground chicken in to 6 balls and form in to patties – set aside.
  6. Let’s prep the buns and toppings. First, spread a thin layer of butter on the inside of each bun.
  7. For the buns – you can either toast them in the oven or a toaster oven or you can grill them on the stove top. I opted to grill mine on the stove top. For that method, heat a large pan over medium heat and add the buns butter side down. Cook butter side down for 5-8 minutes until the buns start to get a golden color and crisp up. Reduce the heat to low, flip, and cook for 1-2 minutes. Remove the buns from the pan and set aside. *Repeat this step until all the buns have been grilled.
  8. At this point, prep any additional toppings you want.
  9. When you have all the toppings ready, it is time to cook the burgers. Heat a large pan over medium heat and add 1 tbsp olive oil. Once the pan is hot, add in a layer of chicken patties (make sure you are not overcrowding the pan). Cook for 6 minutes then flip the burgers, reduce the heat to low, add a slice of cheese on top of each patty, cover and continue cooking for another 8 minutes.
  10. Once the patties are cooked through and the cheese is melted, remove from the pan and assemble the burgers to your liking. I started with a bun, topped with caramelized onions and pickles, then added the chicken patty on tio and finished it off with tomatoes and lettuce!
