Northern Cafe

Every once in a while, you find a place that isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an institution. In Vancouver, that place is Northern Cafe. This spot is an absolute icon, voted the best brunch and breakfast in the city several times, and it draws people from literally all over the world. It’s been serving up magical food since 1924, combining classic breakfast dishes with Asian flavors and flare.

Located in the most unassuming spot, you’ll likely be met with a decent wait due to its very limited seating. But I am telling you, if you have the time, it is so worth it. The charm of Northern Cafe hits you the moment you step inside. The tables and floor are a little slanted and wobbly, and the space is a bit cramped, but it all adds to the incredible, cozy charm. This spot will have you feeling like part of the family, both in their incredible hospitality and from the very first bite of your dish. We all know Canadians are known for being friendly, but the welcome you get here is like a warm hug.

Anyway, let’s get into the food. The menu was incredible, and it was so hard to choose what to order. I finally landed on the Breakfast Clubhouse Sandwich. This masterpiece came with bacon, ham, lettuce, tomato, cheese, house mayo, and perfectly runny eggs, served with a side of super crispy hash browns. I loved the textures and the freshness of this sandwich. It was buttery, eggy, soft, and luscious all at once.

My husband ordered the Breakfast Poutine, and WOW. This was a hearty and delicious creation of smokey sausages, fried onions, tater tots, cheese curds, and poached eggs, all smothered in a rich Bearnaise sauce. It was definitely on the heavier side, but every bite was pure comfort and flavor. That Bearnaise sauce alone could cure a hangover!

Northern Cafe is more than just a meal; it’s an experience. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves a good breakfast and appreciates a place with history, heart, and incredible food.
