Get ready for a burger bash like no other at Fat Hippo in Newcastle Upon Tyne! This fun and quirky spot has multiple locations across the UK, so you can indulge in their outrageous creations no matter where you are. The Newcastle location I visited was a cozy underground haven that set the tone for a fantastic dining experience.
As an American foodie from Oklahoma, land of legendary burgers, I was eager to dive into Fat Hippo’s menu and see if they’d meet my high expectations. Spoiler alert: they delivered! The menu is a love letter to all things comfort food, with standouts like fried pickles, dirty fries, and smothered chicken tenders. And, of course, their burgers are the main event. But what’s even more impressive is their dedication to catering to all tastes, with a dedicated vegan menu and chicken sandwiches to boot.
I opted for the Fat Hippo burger, the restaurant’s namesake creation, which boasts not one but two juicy patties, American cheese, crispy bacon, chorizo, onion rings, and a generous dollop of Fat Hippo sauce. While the burger was undeniably flavorful, its sheer size made it a bit of a challenge to tackle. I also found the bacon to be slightly undercooked for my liking – a minor quibble, especially considering the differences in UK bacon. Nonetheless, Fat Hippo’s creative twist and generous portions make it a must-visit for burger enthusiasts.
Rating: 4/5 stars
Recommendation: Don’t be afraid to get adventurous and try one of the more unique burgers on the menu. And if you’re feeling peckish, start with those addictive fried pickles!
Will I return? Absolutely! Fat Hippo has earned a spot on my list of top burger joints in the UK.
