Kartoffel Kiste

Germans love potatoes and they eat them in so many forms. So it should be no surprise that there is a restaurant dedicated entirely to potatoes (they do have some other options, but ya go here for the potatoes). The name of this restaurant translates to “Potato Restaurant Box” and it lives up to that name with things like potato bread, potato soup, potato pancakes, potato dumplings, and so much more on the menu. If you aren’t in the mood for potatoes though, they do offer classic German dishes like schnitzel, sausages, and steaks!

I was a bit overwhelmed seeing the menu because I have never seen so many potato options on one menu. Luckily, my German husband was there to help me navigate it. This was another spot where we ordered way too much food – this is like a constant struggle for us because we want to try everything, but we are only two people. We ordered a variety of dishes – Currywurst, Schnitzel, and Potato Dumplings. The potato dumplings were filled with spinach and served with a mushroom, garlic, and a cheese sauce. These were massive and not what I was expecting. In my head, I was getting dumplings filled with potatoes and spinach but no no, these are like a mashed potato shaped into a ball and filled with spinach. I did enjoy it though, even though in my head it was different. It was a lot though and super heavy and filling – I couldn’t even finish one of the dumps. The Currywurst was a nice break from all the potatoes and it is one of my favorite dishes. They even offer different spice levels for the Currywurst, which I haven’t seen. I will mention though, Germans don’t really do spice, so even the spiciest option is not spicy compared to what we have in the US. And then lastly, the Schnitzel we tried came with bell peppers and mushrooms in a “spicy” sauce. It was really tasty, but definitely not spicy for our standards. The bell peppers though added a nice flavor to the crispy, juicy schnitzel and was a fun variety to the mushroom sauce I normally eat!

Check this spot out for all things potatoes! Just know that you are going to leave stuffed and will probably need a nap, or a walk around the city.
