This restaurant is located in a building with a cool history. Originally built in 1825 as a casino it withstood many decades and was even damaged in 1944 to then be rebuilt. Finally in 1999, the building was repurposed and renovated and in 2005 Bitburger moved in and has occupied it since! It boasts a total of 390 seats inside AND 350 seats on the terrace, making it the largest gastronomic spots in Trier. Their menu sprawls several pages, with about half of those pages dedicated to German beers and cocktails (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options). The food menu includes breakfast, salads, sausages, flatbreads, and traditional German dishes. The entire menu though focuses on German dishes that are eaten around various regions of Germany so you’ll find lots of delicious options. This spot was so fun and a great option for outdoor seating when the weather is nice. I was actually shocked at how packed this place was as the patio was almost entirely full. The menu is a bit overwhelming, especially if you don’t speak German or are not familiar with the dishes. They do have English translations on their menu, but there are still a lot of options to look through. I ended up ordering the Berlin Currywurst since I wanted something on the less hearty side, but still wanted a substantial lunch to fill me up. If you have never tried Currywurst, it is a signature dish from Berlin and is served with a sausage (typically cut in to pieces) and is served with a tomato based sauce with lots and lots of curry powder. It also usually comes with fries and it is best with a side of mayonnaise. Bitburger’s version of the Berlin currywurst was pretty tasty (although not as good as what you can get in Berlin but I won’t hold it against them since they are one of the furthest cities from Berlin!). Overall though this spot was a winner. Plenty of seating, cool history of the building, and delicious German food. If you are looking for very typical German dishes, this is absolutely the spot to try. Just make sure to grab a beer or cocktail to enjoy with your meal.
