Berliner Gemuse Kebap

If you have read my post on Ephesus Kebab, then you’ll know how rare it is to find Doner outside of Berlin. And surprisingly, Trier has two spots (that we found in the city center area). Berliner Gemuse Kebap is tucked down a side street off of the main open area in the city center and might be a bit harder to find. Unlike traditional Doner, this spot serves Chicken Doner and Vegetable Doner. Fun fact: in Berlin there are actually laws around what you can call a ‘doner’ – if it is not made with a certain percentage of lamb and beef it cannot be called Doner or must say “Chicken” or “Vegetable” explicitly as to not mislead customers. We wanted to try this spot to see how it stacked up against traditional Doner. We both ordered the Chicken Kebap with grilled vegetables, garlic sauce, and all the toppings. It was very tasty and full of flavor. The chicken itself was super juicy and tender and a great swap if you don’t eat lamb or beef! I will say though that we liked this one less than Ephesus and that really comes down to the meat, bread, and garlic sauce. Once of the biggest things that makes a doner so delicious is the bread it comes on and the garlic sauce. While most places in Berlin use the same Turkish bread, outside of Berlin the traditional bread is much harder to come by so many spots will use more of a pita style bread. I did really enjoy the addition of the grilled vegetables. Overall this doner was still super tasty, just different. But it is a great option for vegetarians or if you don’t eat lamb/beef and for that I love the ability to adapt the Doner so that there is an option for everyone!
