Ephesus Kebab-Haus

One of the most German dishes out there is Doner Kebap; however although a lot of people may know this dish, it is actually primarily found in Berlin, where it was created. Finding Doner outside of Berlin used to be extremely difficult and pretty much non-existent. Over the last few years though, it is becoming more common to see Doner in other cities around Germany (arguably though it isn’t as good as what you can find in Berlin but hey sometimes ya have a craving). One of the primary reasons for the lack of Doner outside of Berlin is the history of it. Doner is a popular dish made by the Turkish immigrants that settled in, you guessed it, Berlin. Therefore, in smaller towns where the Turkish population is much smaller, you won’t find the ingredients and bread that make Doner what it is!

My husband and I were actually shocked that we found not one but TWO Doner spots in Trier’s city center (one was classic lamb and meat while the other featured vegetarian and chicken options). Ephesus Kebap is a small walk up counter with a few seats on the patio. Doner though is very much grab and go food and can be easily enjoyed while walking around (this is what it was originally intended for). For a Doner outside of Berlin, this was actually really really good – in fact, I went back almost daily for lunch on our 5 day trip. The meat was tender and flavorful, the bread was soft but crispy on the outside, and that garlic sauce was just yes chef. I also love the crunchy vegetables and the hot vs cold – it just adds so much texture and flavor for a perfect bite. If you have never had Doner, I encourage you to try it ASAP (preferably in Berlin; but if ya can’t get to Berlin any Doner will do). If you are in Trier though, my vote is for Ephesus Kebab Haus for a tasty Doner that will satisfy that craving.
