Monahan’s is a Clam Shack that is feet away from the ocean in Narragansett, Rhode Island. This is the perfect summer spot to grab a bite to eat and maybe some ice cream, and sit outside watching the tide roll in. Their menu features so many wonderful fish options like Lobster Rolls, Chowder, Clam Cakes, Stuffies, Fish & Chips, and more. And for those that aren’t into seafood as much, they have a variety of options for everyone to enjoy so you won’t miss out on the views even if ya don’t eat fish! Of course I had to stop in and grab a bite for lunch so I ordered a Manhattan (red) Clam Chowder and a Cold Lobster Roll. If you have read my other Rhode Island or Boston posts, then you probably know that my favorite is New England Clam chowder, which is the white and creamy version. Manhattan chowder has tomatoes and usually vegetables like carrots, celery, and onions. Monahan’s red chowder was fine, but nothing to ride home about to be honest. I also feel like red chowder has less clams and white and it is really more like a tomato soup with some vegetables. Let’s move on to the Lobster Roll. I ordered the cold one, mostly because it was pretty hot outside and the thought of eating a hot, buttery roll just didn’t really sit well. The cold roll was dressed with a lot of lobster, but it didn’t seem to have a lot of claw meat and felt like it was mostly filled with tail meat which is a little bit tougher and chewier. I also felt like the flavor was lacking. While there was a ton of lobster in the roll, it was a bit tougher and not tender and buttery like I am used to. While Monahan’s has been a staple in Rhode Island for years, I actually never went there when I was in college (probably bc Iggy’s was my preferred spot for fish). To be honest, this just wasn’t the spot for me when it comes to food after trying it. I would maybe go back and order something different and the views of the ocean are incredible, but my order was just okay. Check them out for yourself though and let me know what you think! You can find their full menu here.
