Modern Pastry

If you have read my post about Mike’s, then you’ll have heard about Modern. If not, let me quickly tell ya about it. Modern and Mike’s are both pastry shops in Boston with huge followings and a lot of people have opinions. You either are a Modern fan or a Mike’s fan and there is no in-between and if you ask a dozen people in Boston, you’ll get split answers every time. I have always been a Mike’s fan and only recently tried Modern.

So let’s dig into it. Modern Pastry is smaller with fewer locations than Mike, but you’ll still find all the classic Italian desserts on their menu. If you’re in the know, their North End location also has “Modern Underground” which is a whole bar and grill serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Mike’s definitely doesn’t have this). To make my comparison of the two shops fair, I grabbed a classic cannoli with chocolate chips from Modern; I also grabbed a rainbow cookie for fun! Modern’s cannoli are much smaller and have fewer flavor options, but they are also filled fresh to order. Their cannoli shells are very similar to Mike’s – super crunchy and flakey. Modern’s ricotta was lighter and not as thick, which I really enjoyed but the texture wasn’t as creamy or soft and velvety. And maybe a bit sweeter. Overall the cannoli was super delicious and I don’t think you can go wrong with Modern or Mike’s. If you prefer more flavor options and a thicker cream, then Mike’s is gonna be the spot for you; but if you’re looking for more classic cannoli with a lighter filling, then Modern is the way to go! But I mean if you’re eating fresh cannoli, you really can’t go wrong!
