Iggy’s is a Rhode Island icon and a staple! If you are from Rhode Island or even spent time there, Iggy’s is one of those places you have definitely been to. As someone who spent 4 years in Rhode Island, Iggy’s will always have a place in my heart. Back when I lived in Rhode Island though, the Iggy’s by me (in Narragansett) was only open during the summer months, which was devastating – it was also a shack, not a full restaurant like it is now! Iggy’s is most famously known for their chowder and doughboughs, but they have a ton of seafood on their menu. And nothing screams summer like fresh chowder and hot doughboughs covered in cinnamon sugar. Boy do I miss those days, so you better believe the first stop in Rhode Island was to Iggy’s. It was also my husband’s first time in Rhode Island so it was my job to show him all the best places and stuff him full of seafood!
We ordered way too much for the two of us, but like I couldn’t help myself. We got a Cup of New England Clam Chowder, Stuffed Quahogs, Fried Seafood Platter, and Doughboys. Let’s go through it all. The Chowder – they do have all 3 types, but New England is my favorite and Iggy’s really does have some of the best. Steaming hot, but once it cools down it is so creamy and I like how thick it is. Plus it has a decent amount of clams and not just potatoes. I’d give it like a solid 7. If you aren’t from New England, Stuffed Quahogs might be a new term; it is a clam shell stuffed with chopped clams, breadcrumbs, herbs & spices, and sausage. If you aren’t a huge clam fan, these are a delicious way to eat them as they are so buttery and tender and you won’t even realize there are clams in there. Don’t knock ’em until you’ve tried ’em! Next comes the Fried Seafood Platter – this comes with so many things so it is a great way to sample a lot of items, but I would recommend splitting it. Here is what is in it: Fish, Whole Clams, Shrimp, Scallops, Clam Strips, Onion Rings, Clam Cakes, Fries, and Coleslaw. To be honest, it is a lot and pretty heavy since everything is fried, but the fish is delicate and buttery. It is a good plate to get to sample a bunch of things though or if you are indecisive! And last, but certainly not least – the Doughboys. This is one of the other items that Iggy’s is known for. They are basically beignets – but do NOT call them that in front of the locals – and they are fried to order and perfect, pillowy fried dough! They then coat them fresh with sugar that gives them just the perfect amount of sweetness. These also need to be eaten fresh so don’t take them to go or you might not get the full experience! Go check Iggy’s out, and luckily they are open year round now so you can get that chowder and doughboy fix anytime ya need it!
