An ICONIC pastry shop since 1946….like that is a long freaking time! Mike’s has a huge following, but it isn’t the only local pastry shop that people flock to. It’s direct competitor is Modern – and people are pretty polarizing on which is better…it’s kind of like Coke vs Pepsi! Now, I’ve always loved Mike’s and I think their selection is better – from cannolis to cakes to cookies to pies, they’ve got everything and it is all made fresh in-house. And while they do have so many delicious, tempting pastries, my favorite and must get is the cannolis. Always filled fresh and made-to-order. You won’t find stale or soggy cannoli shells here! They also have a crazy selection of fillings and toppings that you can make something like 100 combinations. Mike’s cannolis are also bigger than Modern, if that makes a difference in which you try. I grabbed Mike’s first thing after I got into the city, and as you can see from the 6 giant cannolis, I was having a bit of a “my eyes are bigger than my stomach” moment but I regret nothing! With so many flavors I struggled to decide what to get so I went for broke (plus I was sharing them with co-workers). Alright here are the flavors I grabbed: Plain (ofc it is a baseline), Chocolate Chip, Pistachio, Espresso, Florentine, and Hazelnut! I can’t pick a favorite though because they were all so unique and flavorful. I will say that I loveeee how crunchy and crispy their cannoli shells are; they snap when you bite into them but are so light and flakey. Their ricotta filling is also divine – so creamy and smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. Their cream is also thiccccc and I love that. The only downside is that if you don’t eat these same day then they don’t really hold up. The filling still tastes great the next day, but the shells definitely aren’t as crunchy and flakey if they sit overnight; so if you grab cannoli from Mike’s eat them ASAP and don’t wait!
