Located in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, Hon’s Wutan House has been serving up tasty traditional dishes since 1972! Their menu ranges from dumplings to noodle soup, to classic Chinese dishes (like kungpao chicken, mapo tofu, sauteed eggplant, and so much more). My husband and I wanted to spend the day eating our way through Chinatown, so we came here for one thing – dumplings! We also came super early so we weren’t really ready for a whole spread or lunch, just some dumps to start the day off right! We grabbed two dumpling orders – Sichuan Spicy Wonton ($11.95) and Pork and Chive ($14.95). Both dumpling dishes were boiled, which is my personal favorite and preference when it comes to dumplings. Both of the fillings were also super rich and tender, bursting (literally) with flavor! For the Pork & Chive dumplings, they are served with a tangy, salty dipping sauce that compliments the dumplings really well. Something about the warm dumplings with the soft wrapper being dipped into the slightly cooler sauce is just so so good. The Spicy Sichuan Dumplings were served in a chili sauce with green onions and cilantro. It had so much flavor and a decent amount of heat, but the tingling heat that doesn’t stay on your tongue. The sauce was so rich with garlic, ginger, chili flakes, soy sauce, and a vinegar of some sort – so vibrant with a tang to set off the dumplings! It is also worth noting that every dumpling is hand-wrapped by chefs onsite and they only use the highest quality ingredients. And you can tell the freshness and quality and care that they put into every dish they served. This is definitely a SF institution that should not be missed and there is a reason they have been around so long and are one of the most sought after spots to eat.
