Is there anything more Italian than gelato? Well maybe pizza and pasta, but gelato should not be left out of this group! While Gelateria La Romana was not started in Milan, it did make its way to Milan to open a store and it is absolutely worth a stop. The gelato is made fresh, in house, daily and you can taste the difference for sure. Every day you will find different flavors as their menu rotates and can be seasonal so they use fresh, local ingredients. Another thing that sets this gelateria apart is that no gelato is kept out for more than 3 hours; so this means everything is made in small batches and is extremely fresh. Their gelato has a higher fat content, which makes it so creamy and dreamy. My top 3 flavors are – Pistachio, Nocciolo (Hazelnuts), and Crema Dal 1947. The pistachio is a no brainer and is definitely my favorite if I had to choose only one flavor – the pistachio really shines. You also can’t go wrong with hazelnut, it’s going to be like a lighter Nutella flavor with the hazelnut shining through. And the flavor that is most unique is the Crema, it is a delicate Italian custard with hints of vanilla and lemon! Here you can grab a cup or cone and depending on the size, you’ll spend 3-5 euros. I usually grab a small cone, which allows you to get up to 2 flavors, and that costs 3 euro. They will even fill the cone with chocolate if you want and top it with fresh whipped cream, for no additional charge. Definitely get the whipped cream – it’s magical!
