An unassuming restaurant in Toronto serving up some of the best dumplings and Chinese food you will find in North America. Mother’s Dumplings started back in 2005 and has been around since serving the community and even got a nod in the Michelin Guide. Their dishes come from family recipes from NorthEastern China and you can absolutely taste the love that goes in to each one. Chinese food, and dumplings in particular, is one of my favorite cuisines – which I know is a big range – and this spot reminds me of my time in China. A number of Chinese restaurants throughout North America definitely adjust the dishes to the palates of the area they are serving and what I love about Mother’s Dumplings is that the dishes we enjoyed brought me right back to my time in China and tasted so authentic!
The menu has a lovely array of dishes from dumplings to buns to congee and more! You can order your dumplings pan fried, boiled, or steamed – my preference is actually boiled, which is not something we typically have in this part of the world. We obviously had to grab dumplings and even though there were only two of us dining, of course we had to try multiple! We ordered Pork Soup Dumplings, Boiled Pork and Chive Dumplings, Pan Fried Pork and Bok Choy Dumplings, and Fried Egg and Tomato Entree. If you ever see Egg & Tomato on the menu at a Chinese Restaurant then the place is legit and you HAVE to order it! I ate this dish everyday in China and to this day it is one of my favorites. It is super simple, but packs so much flavor. Mother’s Dumplings Egg & Tomato was incredibly tasty and rich. It is perfect over rice where all the sauce seeps in creating a delicious bowl of rice at the end. And of course the dumplings were phenomenal. I mean ya can’t have dumplings in the name and not have delicious dumps. My favorites were the boiled ones, but all of them had such juicy and savory fillings with a perfectly thin, delicate, and chewy wrapper.
10/10 recommend this spot if you are in Toronto. Make sure to check out their calendar in case you need a reservation – we were able to walk in and the restaurant does have a large amount of seating so even if there is a wait, it shouldn’t be too long. You can also check out their full menu here so you can drool until you make it there!
