If you’ve read through or seen the photos of my other Toronto reviews, I am sure you are thinking…. Aly, did you eat anything besides Asian food, specifically noodle dishes? And the answer is barely haha. I underestimated the food scene in Toronto and was so pleasantly surprised on the trip to find such a diverse food and culture scene. I leaned into the Asian cuisines because they were everywhere and I just couldn’t get enough. If you have been around long enough, you probably know that Asian food is my favorite category – Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai – give me ALL of it. So that leads us to MoGouYan, a hand pulled noodle spot. A little history first – MoGouYan started in LanZhou City, China; which happens to be the birthplace of hand pulled noodles. Fast forward to 2019, when they opened their first location in Toronto.
At MoGouYan, you’ll choose the bowl of soup and toppings you want and then you get to choose the shape and thickness of the noodles, and with 5 options it might be difficult to decide. The staff is amazing though and will help suggest the best type of noodle for the soup you are ordering! My husband and I grabbed two different bowls – one hot and one cold – with two different styles of noodles. We went with the Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce with thick round noodles; and we got the Braised Beef with thick flat noodles. I loved the cold Noodles with the creamy, tangy sesame sauce – these also came with shredded carrots, cucumbers, and bean sprouts and topped with a seasoned egg and chili oil. It was light yet filling and had so much flavor. If you’re looking for something that will cool you off on a warm day, THIS is the dish. The Braised Beef Noodles were stunning though and warmed up my body, my soul, and my mouth. They do not play around with the spice, so tread lightly if you are a wimp like me. The broth though was delicate and rich and the beef was so tender and flavorful. Check out the full menu here.
