Al’s

Another Chicago institution that started in 1938 – Al’s beef might be the best thing I ate on my short trip to Chicago. This is another spot that HAS to be on your list to try and they have multiple locations across the Chicago area for you to enjoy this spot. They cook all of their beef in house and it is slow cooked to perfection. I will say, if you are not a local they will be able to tell because when I walked in this shop to order, I was completely out of my element and had zero idea what I was doing. Luckily I went off peak hours, so I could fumble through without anyone getting too annoyed with me lol. Their menu is pretty simple, they have beef, sausage, beef + sausage, and a few other things. I grabbed a Regular Beef that comes on soft french bread, loaded with juicy, tender beef, and peppers. They will also ask you how you want it – wet or dry ….this is where I was completely lost and looked at them with what I can assume was a blank expression. The sandwich comes wet regularly, and this just means that they dunk it into all those delicious meat juices so the bread gets extra soft and makes it extra messy to eat! You can also customize your sandwiches with hot relish, peppers, or cheese. This was hands down probably my favorite meal in Chicago and I would go back just for this Italian beef sandwich. I don’t think I know of anything like it outside of Chicago, so definitely don’t miss out!
