Jalapeno Wonton Poppers

If you’re a Trader Joe’s fan, then you have probably seen their version of jalapeno poppers and don’t get me wrong, they are pretty good, but at like $5 for a bag of 8, the price just doesn’t make sense. I set out to create my own version with all the goodness at a fraction of the cost, so you can eat them guilt free with more in your pocket. I make mine in the air fryer because there is nothing worse than a kitchen smelling of used oil…but if you want to fry these and that is your thing, then absolutely go for it! You could also theoretically bake these in the oven, but I personally don’t think they would get crispy enough. So just use an air fryer if ya have one. I also highly recommend dunking these in Sweet Chili Sauce for the ultimate bite.

Makes: 20 -25 Wontons

Prep Time: 15 Minutes

Cook Time: 20 Minutes

Total Time: 35 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8oz Cream Cheese, Softened
  • 2 Cups Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • 6 Jalapenos, Seeded and Diced
  • Salt + Pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 Tsp Onion Powder
  • Wonton Wrappers
  • For Serving: Sweet Chili Sauce, Ranch, Buffalo Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Diced Green Onions, Optional
  • Oil Spray, For Cooking

To Make:

  1. In a large bowl, add the 8oz cream cheese, 2 cups cheddar cheese, diced jalapenos, 2 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, green onions (if using), and salt + pepper (about 2 tsp salt and 1 tsp black pepper).
  2. Mix well to combine and you should have a thick, but spreadable cheese mixture.
  3. Now we can assemble the wontons. I use a premade, square wonton wrapper that I picked up at the store. Also at this stage, grab a small bowl of water that will help you seal the wrapper.
  4. Grab a wonton wrapper, place about 2-3 tsp of the cheese mixture in the center, dip your finger in the bowl of water and trace the edges of the wonton wrapper. Now we fold, you can really do any style or whatever is easiest for you. I made mine into little pockets, but you can just fold them in a triangle and call it a day. Place the ready to go wonton on a plate and set aside.
  5. Repeat step 4 until all of the filing has been used.
  6. Now it is time to cook – I used an air fryer so I could get that crispiness without all the oil. So for the air fryer, set it to 325-350 Fahrenheit and line the basket with foil. Place a single layer of the wontons in the air fryer basket and spray with oil. Cook them for 8-10 minutes until golden brown. When they are finished, set them on a plate to serve!
  7. Repeat step 6 until all of the wontons are cooked.
  8. Serve with your favorite dip – ranch, sweet chili oil, or blue cheese!
