Gyudon Beef Bowls

Want to take a trip to Tokyo, but it’s not in the budget? Well this dish can at least transport your taste buds there. Gyudon is a classic Japanese dish that is all about comfort and convenience. It is so easy and it produces a super flavorful beef that is best served over rice with a runny fried egg. While I make mine in separate pots, you can actually make this in the rice cooker as well – just don’t judge me because it is the ONE kitchen item that I don’t actually have….which makes no sense since I make rice weekly and tend to cook a lot of Asian inspired dishes. Anyways, make this dish if you want a taste of Japan without the $$$ you’d spend getting there.

Serves: 2-3

Prep Time: 5 Minutes

Cook Time: 25 Minutes

Total Time: 30 Minutes

For the Beef:

  • 1 Lb Thinly Shaved Beef
  • 2 Yellow Onions, Sliced
  • 2 Tsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Mirin
  • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 Cup Beef Broth

For Serving:

  • Cooked Rice
  • Fried Egg Over Easy
  • Diced Green Onions
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Chili Oil
  • Shredded Cabbage + Sesame Dressing

To Make:

  1. This recipe actually goes super quick, so it is best to make all the serving ingredients before you start the beef. Start the rice and then prep the green onions and fry the eggs.
  2. After you have everything prepped, let’s make the beef. In a small bow, add 2 tsp sugar, 2 tbsp mirin, 2 tbsp soy sauce and 1 cup of beef broth and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Next, heat a large pan over medium heat and once hot, add in the sliced yellow onion. Cook for 8-10 minutes until softened.
  4. Then, while the pan is still hot, add in the thinly shaved beef and cook for about 5 minutes on medium. Reduce the heat to low and add in the beef broth mixture we made earlier. Allow the beef to simmer in this sauce for 15-20 minutes.
  5. After the beef is finish cooking and the sauce is slightly reduced, it is time to serve. In a bowl, add a large scoop of rice and top with 1/4 of the cooked beef and onions and then pour a spoonful or two of the sauce in the pan over the top. Top the bowls with a fried egg, chili oil, green onion and serve with a shredded cabbage with sesame dressing for a wonderful crunch.
