Devocion

Slow mornings, coffee, and a buttery pastry – these are the things in life that I love and that make me happy. For me, an ideal morning is sitting in a cute, cozy coffee shop, sipping on a warm cappuccino and enjoying a pastry of some kind. Devocion checked all of those boxes! I had popped in here one afternoon for a to-go cup for some afternoon caffeine and knew that I had to go back! Devocion has a few locations around NYC, but I visited their Downtown Brooklyn shop! I loved this space with all the greenery and the 18ft windows to enjoy the views of the area. The space is so light and open but still feels warm and cozy.

Devocion prides themselves on sourcing the freshest and highest quality beans. They also aim to use the beans within a few days of roasting for peak flavor and freshness. You can definitely taste the difference in their drinks. I grabbed a cappuccino and it was light and airy with a smooth, bold espresso. It was thoroughly enjoyed and went so well with the buttery, kouign-amann! Kouign-Amann is one of my favorite pastries, but they aren’t as widely known or made. If you have tried one, you know how good they are and if you have not, let me introduce you. It starts with the same dough as a croissant – so you get the light and airy bites; but inside of open baking it, they bake it in a controlled space. What I mean by that, is they will bake it in a space that does not allow the dough to rise as much and it will take the shape of the container it is baked in. On top of that, they are drenched in a sugar syrup solution so while they bake, the outside gets super crispy and forms sugar crystals all around it. When you bite into one you get a lovely crunch with a soft, butter, sugar center. It is truly perfection and Devocion’s kouign-amann is one of the best I have ever had.

So go try them, and make sure to grab a kouign-amann – best enjoyed right then and there!
