You have probably heard of the viral “cronut” but you may not have heard of the baker this viral sensation. Dominique Ansel is a master in the baking world and is always elevating and creating unique items. Several years ago (in 2013), he created the cronut which is a cross between a croissant and donut. People went absolutely nuts for it and the lines at his bakery were unreal. Fast forward to over 10 years later, the cronut is still as popular as it was on day one and it can now be found in bakeries around the world, making their own. If you want the true OG cronut though, you have to head to NYC and make a trip to Dominique Ansel’s bakery where you may even get a chance to see him in person!
What makes the cronut so irresistible? It takes the form of a donut, but has light, fluffy, buttery layers that croissants do. When you bite into it, you get a crunchy exterior and the most buttery, light interior. Dominique Ansel features a new flavor of the cronut every month to keep us all on our toes. While you should absolutely make a trip here for the cronut, I highly recommend grabbing a few other pastries and treats to try. Everything that Ansel makes is phenomenal – he is incredibly talented.
I also highly recommend getting to the shop before they open, especially during the peak tourist season. I grabbed my husband and we set out to be there about 30 minutes ahead of the opening on a Saturday morning in April. I was shocked when I saw there was already a line forming….10 years after the first cronut made its appearance and it still draws a line! It is also worth noting that they only make a small number of cronuts each day, so if you aren’t there early, your chances of snagging one decrease. Once they open, the line moves super fast and you’ll have time to look at all the other pastries ya want before you get to the front (unless your first in line lol). We grabbed 2 cronuts, a kouign-amann, a classic croissant and 2 cappuccinos. We dropped about $50, so be prepared when you go that it is $$, but it is also NYC, so everything is $$$.
Don’t miss this spot and check out their Instagram to stay up to date on the cronut of the month!
